St. Brandon

St. Brandon is a large reef area consisting of small islands and cays. It is part of Mauritius and we stopped here on our way from Rodrigues to Madagascar. It's basically uninhabited, although there's a fishing camp in the south. It's a wild place where marine life still thrives. On every cay we visited we saw tern colonies nesting and rearing their young. The pure white terns tended to put their single egg in the crook of a dead tree, whereas the dark noddy terns simply lay their eggs on the coral, sometimes using shells to demarcate the nest. Apart from eggs we also saw little chicks and bigger chicks. The birds were very curious, sometimes hovering just a couple of meters from our head.
